San Marino

San Marino

San Marino is the 5th smallest country in the world, being only 61 square kilometres. To put that into perspective, it’s about the size of Lanciano. Being surrounded by Italy, it is one of only three completely enclaved countries in the world.

Founded in 301 CE, San Marino is also the oldest sovereign nation in existence. It is named after Saint Marinus, who, in the late 200s, settled there on the top of Mount Titano.

The country is composed of a handful of towns, with the town of San Marino on the top of the mountain.

It was a cloudy morning, which didn’t do too much for the views, which are normally spectacular. However, the thick fog created a lovely Game-of-Thrones vibe as we explored the town and its castles.

We spent that night in nearby Ravenna. Stay tuned for Part Two of the blog!
