The year may be winding down, but the CCI spirit of adventure is still going strong—this time, conquering the Majella mountains. A group of adventurers set out bright and early from Lanciano, ready for a day of exploration and new challenges. Ally, Lex, Maria, Ava, Keiran, Rhys, and Mr. C began the hike from Hotel Mammarosa toward the breathtaking Hermitage of San Giovanni, nestled high in the heart of nature.
The weather couldn’t have been more perfect—sunny skies and a gentle breeze kept their spirits high as they made their way along the trail. Reaching an impressive altitude, the group enjoyed stunning landscapes, with panoramic views stretching across the majestic mountains and valleys.
“When I looked up and saw the view of the epic Mont Amaro, the early morning uphill trek and bitter cold became worth it,” shared Ally, who helped organize the amazing outing.
“The group not only took in views of the stunning environment but also improved their historical knowledge when they reached the Hermitage of San Giovanni all'Orfento,” she explained.
The group explored the rock-carved rooms which served as an ancient monastery for Pietro da Morrone (later Pope Celestine V) and his disciples between 1284 and 1293. Bronze Age artifacts have also been discovered here.
“Everyone who came did an amazing job, and they all expanded their comfort zones for the outdoors,” said Ally who expressed gratitude for Mr. C’s help and encouragement and Mario’s skillful driving.
According to local legend, Majella mountains get their name from Maja, the eldest and most beautiful of the Pleiades nymphs. Her tragic story of love and loss adds an air of mystery and depth to this already majestic place.
They capped off the day with a well-earned gelato on the way back to Lanciano—a sweet ending for a sweet adventure! 🍦
