Festivals

One of the lovely and unique customs of Lanciano is its celebration of its medieval heritage annually in August and September.

The annual Medieval Festival ran for four days including last weekend in the Lancianovecchia Quartiere, which is the oldest part of Lanciano.

Last Friday, thousands of visitors flooded into Lanciano for the Festival of San Edigio or the Festival of the Bells. The local tradition is that one purchases a bell for a loved one.

Then on Sunday, the Mastrogiurato Ceremony was held. It is an ancient one for Lanciano. In earlier times, the Mastrogiurato was privileged to receive the keys to the city and oversaw the market. Today, it is a ceremony in which a leading citizen of the town is honoured by his fellow citizens for service to the town.
